Knowledge and experience to save the World


The Regional Training Course on CBRN International Legal Instruments and Mechanisms for the African Atlantic Façade, organized within the framework of the European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, was held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, 24 - 27 June 2019.
Organized by the Regional Secretariat based in Rabat and the International CBRN Institute in Belgium, the training was an important opportunity for national representatives from the region to learn about the international treaties which cover all types of weapons of mass destruction (WMD)- related international legal instruments and mechanisms, the national benefits from participating in the treaties, and the progress of national implementation and activities related to CBRN risk mitigation, to share their experiences and define priority actions.
Dr. Yaugen Ryzhykau, presented several related tasks on the OPCW and Australian Group mechanisms, as well as his practical experience in the Chernobyl NPP catastrophe investigation in 1986.
In their opening remarks, Mr. Mohamed Salami, Director of the Regional Secretariat for the African Atlantic Façade, and Mr. Balazs Maar, Programme manager at the European Union, congratulated the National Focal Points (NFPs) and national experts (NE) for their efforts to strengthen CBRN risk mitigation in the region.
The training hosted NFPs and NEs representing Cameroon, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Liberia, Morocco, Sierra Leone and Togo, as well as the European Union, UNICRI, and project implementers in the region.
With Mr. Salami coordinating the discussions, the training achieved the goal of effectively preparing for the implementation of future activities and projects aimed at strengthening national capacities to enable CBRN risk mitigation.
